Reflective writing

The first task you will be asked to complete in LHA101 is a reflective writing task.

Reflection is the ability to think carefully about what you have done so far and analyse this in terms of your future needs and goals. It is a key part of the way you learn. Reflection helps us to learn from both our mistakes and successes. It is a key part of becoming an adaptable, self-sufficient professional who can take initiative and develop new skills on the job. Throughout your degree you will be asked to reflect on different aspects of your learning and produce reflective reports as part of your assignment tasks. Reflective writing deals with specific examples, contents and experiences so it is not an abstract form of writing.

There are a range of helpful online resources available to help you think about reflective writing. Here are a few to get you started:

UNSW Reflective Writing Guide – “Reflective thinking demands that you recognise that you bring valuable knowledge to every experience. It helps you therefore to recognise and clarify the important connections between what you already know and what you are learning. It is a way of helping you to become an active, aware and critical learner.”

University of Portsmouth Reflective Writing Guide (pdf) – “Reflective writing is thus more personal than other kinds of academic writing. We all think reflectively in everyday life, of course, but perhaps not to the same depth as that expected in good reflective writing at university level.”
