You are invited to the fourth Free Uni in the Pub, Alternatives to Western Civilisation series:
WHAT’S WESTERN CIVILIZATION DOING IN AUSTRALIA?
Speaker: Ika Willis
Greg Melleuish, Jennifer Newman, Paul Sharrad
5:30 for 6pm Thursday 29th August 2019
Illawarra Brewery, Small Function Room
(East side of the Entertainment Centre, Crown St. Wollongong)
Associate Professor Ika Willis (English Literatures, UOW) will trace the history of the term “Western Civilization”. How and why did twentieth-century thinkers in Britain and the US cobble together a bunch of texts from wildly diverse linguistic, ethnic, geographical and historical contexts into a thing called “Western Civilization”? And what does it have to do with us here in Australia?
This will be followed by responses from Professor Greg Melleuish (Politics/History, UOW), Jennifer Newman (ACU/Wiradjuri) and Hon. Fellow Paul Sharrad (English Literatures, UOW).
