New review of Colonialism and Male Domestic Service

A new review of Colonialism and Male Domestic Service, written by CASS members Julia Martinez, Claire Lowrie and Frances Steel (along with Victoria Haskins) has just been published in Australian Historical Studies (52:1). Reviewer, Jane McCabe, praises the transcolonial approach of the book for ‘including not only multiple sites, but also sites outside of the British Empire, thus enabling the authors to trace mobilities of service across political boundaries, as well as complex comparisons of Indigenous and Asian men working in service roles across French, Dutch and American colonies in Southeast Asia, northern Australia and the southwest Pacific.’ As McCabe puts it, Colonialism and Male Domestic Service ‘sets the standard for regional, relational histories of colonialism.’ The book was first published in 2019 and was released in paperback in 2020.
